Week 13 Question

“Strong ties convinced friends and family to join the demonstration; the more abundant and diverse weak ties bridged communities and spread the news widely even in the face of government manipulation of mass media and shutdown of the internet and mobile phone networks.”(Zhuo pg. 7) After reading this article, who deserves the most credit for the “success” of the Egyptian revolts (or at least the online revolution that occurred)? The Twitter and Facebook opinion leaders who led the way with their tweets? The followers who spread the message online by “retweeting”? or those followers who turned to twitter for news and spread it to the more meaningful strong-tied networks? The new media forums itself? Each played an important role in the multi-step flow of information and the overall success probably wouldn’t have been possible without each step but who deserves the credit?
